Tutorials - How to make your own skins

There must be many ways to create skins, but I'll just tell you about the way I do it.

To start with, you need a program named XnView. It's a free program and you can download here and install.

You also need a image editing program like Photoshop and GIMP. I use Photoshop, but it's not a freeware, so if you don't have any of these two, I suggest you download GIMP here.

Now that you have all the programs needed, we can start.

First of all, run XnView and search for the GORE main folder.
If you want to create a skin for a weapon, you have to go to the "Models" folder and then the "weapons" folder. You can see some .dmt files in there, which are the ones you need, for instance haw90.dmt (haw90=rocket launcher as we commonly call it). Double click on the .dmt file of the weapon you want to create a skin for. I will use haw90.dmt as an example. When you double click haw90.dmt, a new tab will appear where you will see a picture. That picture is a part of the rocket launcher. As long as it is a .dmt file, you can't edit with any common program, so click on the "Save as" button or press Control Shift S. In the window that appears, choose a folder (or desktop) to save it in and then the file type (I suggest you choose PNG). Click save.

Now run Photoshop
or GIMP and open the haw90.png from wherever you saved it in. Now you can edit the color or anything else you want on that image (the image may seem strange, so imagine you have the rocket launcher and you "warp" it with that image). Always remember that the image must be at the size it was (or have the same proportions) and have the same name!!! When you are done editing, save the edited picture as .png wherever you want and then close Photoshop or GIMP.
Now
open your main gore folder and go to the "Tools" folder. In another window, find the image you made, drag it in the tools folder and drop it
on the "remap" icon. That will create a haw90.dmt file from your image, which will be saved at "Documents and Settings\'Your computer name'" or at your desktop. Now copy that file in Models\weapons. I suggest you make backup of the original skin before you do that, in case you don't like the skin you made.
Some weapons though have more than one .dmt files. haw90.dmt is only a part of the rocket launcher. If you want to change all the rocket launcher, you have to change the other .dmt files in weapons folder that have to do with the rocket launcher the way you edited haw90.dmt.
Furthermore, some weapons have some special effects or special parts. Those effects are located at: Models\effects. Rocket launcher has some special parts for example, so you will have to change the .dmt file(s) in that folder that have to do with the rocket launcher.

If you want to create a skin for players, got at models\players and open the folder of the player who want to create a skin for. There are some .dmt files in there. Follow the same process described above to create a skin for them.

That's all you need to know I think. I hope this helped you.

An other usefull Tutorial by Blackout:

If you're planning to make skins , you need to convert the .dmt file first.

Just open any .dmt file you want to modify and click "Save as" and make it a .png file for example. (in xnview)

Then you can open the .png file in Photoshop for example and edit it. Don't change the image size or the name.

When you're done editing you need to get it back to .dmt. There's a program in "GoreSpecialEdition/Tools" which can do that, it's called remap.exe
Drag and drop your edited file (the .png one) on the remap.exe.
That will create a .dmt file from your image, which will be saved at "Documents and Settings/Your computer name"

Then just copy it back, start gore and try it out.

A hot tip: Always keep the original .dmt in case you don't like your skin Wink

Tutorial by Sardonic:

remap is only needed for layered textures (alpha's, etc)

for normal textures:
- make backup of your original texture
- rename texture from DMT to BMP
- edit texture file with XnView, Photoshop, etc and save as BMP
- rename BMP to DMT
